Characters
Status: Draft. Live in the sandbox campaign. Every number on this page is TEMP: they are first guesses that are still being tuned.
Everyone on the map is a generated, mortal person: your boss, your capos, every soldier in your squads, rival bosses and roaming crews. They're all the same kind of thing. Click any name or face and you get the same character card. What a person is for depends on his place: the boss runs the outfit, a capo holds a roster seat and can manage towns, and a soldier fights in a squad and wears a class.
How you use it
- Click a face or name anywhere to open his card: skills, traits, level, gear and what he thinks of you.
- Let your people earn Experience: every bit of Respect a man earns counts toward his next level. Or buy a level early with the outfit's Respect.
- Hire soldiers from the hire market and grow them. At level 3 a soldier can upgrade to a tier 2 class your outfit has researched.
- Make a proven soldier a capo: he leaves his squad and takes a roster seat.
How it works
What makes a person
| Piece | Live |
|---|---|
| Skills | Muscle, Cunning, Charm, Business. 5 is ordinary: buildings and dice count only the points above 5 |
| Traits | Personality traits, shown on the card. Your boss has exactly two, from the seven sin / virtue pairs |
| Level | From Experience. His place caps it (see below) |
| Class | Soldiers and bosses carry a class: Street Thug, Thief, Crook, Hustler at tier 1, and tier 2 classes through research |
| Gear | What he carries |
| Status | Active, hurt, held prisoner, gone or dead |
Places in the outfit
| Place | What he does | Level cap |
|---|---|---|
| Boss | Runs the outfit; war and diplomacy go through him. His class works like a soldier's | 15 |
| Capo | Holds a roster seat, can manage towns, and has a following of his own | 10 |
| Soldier | Fights in a squad, draws a class wage, has no roster seat | 5 |
A man who loses his tag keeps the levels he already has.
Levels
| Rule | Live |
|---|---|
| Experience | Every bit of Respect a man earns. It's never spent, and it levels him for free |
| The outfit's wallet | The same Respect also lands in the outfit's wallet, which can buy a man's next level early for 75 × his level |
| A soldier's level | Each level above 1 adds +5% damage and +8% HP to his class's base |
| Skill points | A soldier gets one at each level from level 2. They don't buy anything yet |
| Class upgrade | From level 3, a tier 1 soldier can become a tier 2 class your outfit has researched, if that class reads one of his class's stats, his sex allows it and his squad's kit budget has room. It's free: the level is the price |
Getting people
| Way in | Price |
|---|---|
| Hire a soldier | 40 Respect + 8 × his best skill (tier 2 classes cost 1.6×). The market offers 6 men, aged 45 or under |
| Make a soldier a capo | 100 Respect. He leaves his squad, drops his class and takes a roster seat |
| A local contact | Do what he asks and he joins as a capo |
| A captive | Ask a prisoner with no outfit left to join. He may say no |
Hurt and killed
In a squad, a man who goes down while someone in his squad is still standing is wounded: he keeps his place and heals. When a squad's last man falls, every man down in it dies. Anyone under 18 is kept off the board and never fights.
Not in the sandbox
Nerve and family life (marriage and children) are paused in the sandbox.
