Respect & leveling
Status: Draft. Live in the sandbox campaign. Every number on this page is TEMP: they are first guesses that are still being tuned.
Respect is what the street gives you for what you do. Every time one of your people earns Respect, it counts twice: once as that man's own Experience, which levels him up for free, and once into your outfit's Respect on the top bar, which you spend. The wallet pays for hiring, for capos, for kit and for buying a man a level before he has earned it.
How you use it
- Earn it: win encounters, finish what the locals ask of you, run your towns and buildings, and make good calls in scenes.
- Watch the Respect figure on the top bar. That's the outfit's wallet.
- Spend it on the hire market, on making a capo, on growing a squad's kit budget, or on a man's next level from his card.
- Open SELF from the boss plate at the bottom left. A badge shows when your boss has points to spend, and UPGRADE — OPEN THE TREE opens the skill tree.
How it works
One deed, two counts
| Count | Whose | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | The man who did it | Never spent. It levels him up for free as it passes each threshold |
| Respect | His outfit | The same amount lands in the outfit's wallet, to spend |
The wallet never goes down on its own. Only spending takes it down.
Where Respect comes from
| Source | Respect | Who gets the Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Winning an encounter | 20 | The commander who won it |
| Finishing a local's ask | 30, plus 10 Influence | Your boss |
| Hearing a local's story to the end | 10, plus whatever his story's choices pay | Your boss |
| Overseeing towns | 10 for every 14 days his towns' buildings are working | The town's manager |
| Running a building | 10 for every 14 days it works | The man running it |
| A burial spot | 10 per enemy killed, more for a strong one, times the building's level | Your boss |
| A dojo | A trickle while men train there | The men training |
| Humiliating a beaten rival in war | 15 | Your boss |
| A scene choice | What the choice says. A passed skill check pays its target number; a bold call pays 5 | Your boss |
Levels
Experience climbs a fixed ladder. Each threshold passed is a new level, and the log notes it for your named people.
| Level | Experience | Level | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 | 6 | 520 |
| 2 | 50 | 7 | 720 |
| 3 | 120 | 8 | 950 |
| 4 | 220 | 10 | 1,500 |
| 5 | 350 | 15 | 3,400 |
A man's place caps his level: a soldier at 5, a capo at 10, the boss at 15. Experience past the cap still counts, and he climbs again if his cap rises. A man who loses his place keeps the levels he already has.
Buying a level
From a man's card you can buy his next level with the outfit's Respect before his Experience gets there. It costs 75 × his current level. He has to be active and under his cap.
What else Respect buys
| Spend | Price |
|---|---|
| Hire a soldier | 40 + 8 × his best skill; tier 2 classes cost 1.6× |
| Make a soldier a capo | 100 |
| Grow a squad's kit budget | 60 × (steps already taken + 1) |
| A man's next level | 75 × his level |
The boss's skill tree
Your boss gets one point per level to spend on his skill tree, which has four schools: Strength, Cunning, Charm and Business. Points he hasn't spent show as a badge on the boss plate. The SELF page shows his level, his points and what he has taken.
